My daughter – Arthur Blessitt – and a big cross

7 04 2009

I have always heard that you need three people in your life – someone further along in their faith, someone at your level, and someone who is only just beginning to live a life with Christ.  For me it makes all the sense in the world.  I have mentors, and talk openly with friends, and I am a mentor to others.  I love it though when God steps in and allows someone who I mentor to keep me honest and open to hearing Him – last night was one of those times.

We at Westside had the opportunity to hear Arthur Blessitt talk about his amazing journey across the globe carrying a large wooden cross.  Sharing the story of Christ.  Showing the world God’s love and following what He told us to “Go out…”  I heard Mr. Blessitt talk on Sunday and then again last night.  Now I wasn’t planning on going last night – work, life, and serving on a non-profit board were keeping me away from the special session where Mr. Blessitt talked about his experiences in more depth and shared a trailer or two from his movie “the Cross”.

Then in steps in my daughter –

Conversation on the way home from Church – “Dad can we go to that?  It is a once in a life time experience…please.”

Me – “I am not sure… I have to… “

Text message yesterday, “If we end of going to church tonight – which I hope we do – then Emily would like to come.”

Me – “I am working… I have to… “

Phone call – “Dad can I go with Emily if she drives.  I really want to go? Mom said to ask you.”

Me – “sure you can go…” (Thinking but what about me… should I go?)

Phone call – “Emily’s mom doesn’t want her to drive that far, so she is taking us as long as you can pick us up.”

Me – “sure go, and I will pick you up.” (Thinking again but what about me… should I go?)

Board meeting – ends a little early – hmmmm…. I end up driving to church and hearing almost an hour of the 1.5 hour message that Mr. Blessitt shared.  What an amazing man.  What an amazing story.

I thought I would share just one story that stood out to me the most.  A story about him being captured in a Spanish speaking country (I am not sure now which one).  I know I will not do this story justice, but here you go:

He was pulled from a trailer he was staying in and held up in front of a line of men holding guns.  Basically a firing squad.

The leader was saying in Spanish, “Uno…” and he knew what was coming and he started to pray.

He said to himself that he was not going to die without his bible, so he turned to a box of bibles nearby and started pulling some out.

He was scrambling.

He was on his hands and knees.

He pulled one close to his chest and then thought, “I am going to give one to each of the men here.”

They were trying to pull him up.

Trying to make him stand before them.

He kept reaching for the bibles.

When he finally got some extra bibles Mr. Blessitt turned to give the bibles to the men with guns.

When he turned, they were all laying on the ground.

As they started to get up, he still tried to give them a bible, but they all ran away.

Shortly after, he saw that his camp was surrounded by a group of villagers.  All on their knees.  They had witness what happened.

They had seen a bright line come from the sky and knock the men down.

They had seen God save a man – actually save a man physically right before their eyes.

They had seen God save a man.

They had seen God save a man.

They had seen Him.

Impact

8 10 2008

Mandy asked a couple of straight forward questions on her blog today… and it got me thinking about my life…today…in this place…at this stage in life… and here is what I came up with:

Do I dream? – yes.

Do I have a dream? – yes.

What is it? – to impact the world.

Are you chasing after it? – yes – with the small things that I do everyday, the steps that I take, the words that I write, the words that I chose to speak or not speak, all with the thought that everything matters.

I am chasing my dream by living a mission trip daily in my own home for my wife and kids – and as a result for me.

I am chasing my dream by praying in unison with my brothers and sisters, with my men’s group, in church, or by myself.

I am chasing my dream by choosing to make a difference in the life of someone, somewhere, at some point.

I am chasing my dream with God’s help – for I am not strong enough otherwise.

Right now, my steps are small.  Who knows about tomorrow, but I am chasing a dream.

Niagara Falls

29 09 2008

I read recently about Niagara Falls in a book called Show and then Tell. It talked about how Niagara Falls starts.  It starts from mere trickles of snowmelt that combine to form rivulets of water, that turn into tiny streams merging into larger streams to form rivers.  These rivers flow for hundreds of miles before finally merging into the quickening Niagara River, which soon speeds to an unstoppable cliff where it drops hundreds of feet known as Niagara Falls.

Our walk is a lot like this…that small corner if you will…where we help others in their faith walk, grow in our own faith, and reach out to the world.  Some of us are the trickles of snowmelt, others are the rivulets of water, and others are the various rivers.  All are needed in order to end with a majestic water fall – that majestic moment is the moment when ________________________(you fill in the blank).

God is yelling today…

22 07 2008

Wow…I just feel like God is yelling today… yelling about the church and asking us to wake up… I read Pete Wilson’s blog on a regular basis… please read it today… I really cannot put into words right now what I am feeling, but this hits home… so very close to home.  I have talked about mission trips and reaching out locally and globally on my blog off and on for a while now, and I tend to push it to one side or another in my daily life… then God reminds me in His own way – “Don’t forget Michael. Don’t forget.”

On top of all that, minnowspeaks made a comment on his post touched me as well…

“…I think the letter I heard God write to you was a bit different than the one you heard Him write:

Dear Pete (Rock from which I have built My Church)–

You ask me why and the answer is simple. You see what My eyes see, but much of my body is blind. You walk where I have directed your path, but much of my Body is sitting, atrophed in the pews. You do with your hands what I set before you to do, but most of my Body has forgotten they have hands. You say what I have pressed upon your heart to say, but the ears of much of my body are plugged by the selfish urgent little voices all around them. Continue Pete, beloved son, to be a healthy part of the body and take heart as the other part of the body around you begins to wake up. Well done good and faithful servant, God

God is not interested in counting the times you fall down. He is rejoiceing that you are learning to walk! Thank you for helping the rest of us see.”

Both Pete and minnowspeaks really laid it out there for me today.  Thanks guys.

Helping out

21 07 2008

Okay everyone, head over to Ann Jackson’s web site and buy some books for those in the Dominican.  What a great way to lend a hand to someone who can use it.  If you do, she will even send you a signed copy of her book… what a deal, and what a way to help out.
